Alaska National Guard: Earthquake
The Client
The Alaska National Guard led this multi-agency exercise, joined by the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, the Red Cross, and several county-level agencies. This collaborative effort aimed to strengthen the coordination between military, state, and local organizations in responding to large-scale emergencies across Alaska.
The Setting
Following a catastrophic earthquake, clear communication was crucial for public safety. Any misstep in messaging could mean life or death for those affected. Our collaboration with the National Guard focused on ensuring accurate and timely information reached the desperate public.
The Challenge
Coordinating messaging with multiple agencies posed a complex communication challenge. Adapting to diverse stakeholder priorities in the crisis response required agility and precision. Success hinged on avoiding breakdowns in communication that could have dire consequences.
The Solution
Our training exercise immersed participants in a post-earthquake crisis scenario with a high-intensity social and news media environment. Hands-on experience in live press conferences and face-to-face interviews tested senior leadership to communicate with empathy and clarity.
Emphasis was placed on equipping the National Guard with clear and authoritative communication skills in high-stress environments.
The Outcome
The synergy between military and civilian authorities forged confidence and a unified message. Enhanced crisis communication capabilities fostered a prompt and coordinated response to upcoming disasters.
The realism of the scenario strengthened emotional readiness to face ‘the worst day’.
